It was 10 years ago today that Ralph “Bucky” Phillips shot New York State Troopers Joseph Longobardo and Donald Baker as they were staking out a house in Chautauqua County.
One of the 11 shots Phillips’ fired hit Longobardo’s leg, severing an artery. He died September 3 in UPMC Hamot in Erie.
Baker was released from Hamot on November 9, and was flown by state police helicopter to Albany Medical Center to continue his recovery.
Earlier during the longest manhunt in New York State history, Phillips shot and seriously injury another state trooper. Sean Brown did survive the shooting.
He escaped from the Erie County, New York, Correctional Facility in April of 2006. Phillips surrendered September 8 in Warren County, PA.
He’s serving a term of life plus 40 years in New York State prison without the possibility of parole.
