A federal appeals court has ruled that Senate President Pro Tem Joe Scarnati does not have to personally pay legal bills for lawyers who successfully challenged Pennsylvania’s congressional districts as unconstitutionally gerrymandered.
The 3rd US Circuit Court of Appeal said Scarnati was sued for $29,000 in his professional capacity, so he can’t be held liable personally.
The court said lawyers for the plaintiffs should be reimbursed, but didn’t specify by whom.
On a related note, the Bradford Area Public Library is hosting a program on gerrymandering from 5 to 6:30 p.m. Thursday.
It’s being presented by Draw the Lines PA, a non-partisan statewide civic engagement and education initiative.
