Join adventurous staff members of Allegany State Park at the parking lot of the Red House Chapel for an evening nature hike. Park Naturalist Adele Wellman and Thomas LeBlanc will guide you along the Red House Bike Path and a section of the Vader Hollow trail in search of some early signs of spring. You will learn about how an animal knows when it’s time to get ready for hibernation, the preparation required to hibernate and the different kinds of hibernations. It is possible you may encounter an Allegany groundhog predicting the weather for the next 6 weeks. Participants should dress for the weather; bring a flash light or head lamp, water, snack, and a sense of adventure.
This free “Groundhog Day” event takes place on February 2nd from 4:30-6:00 pm, starting in the parking lot of the Red House Chapel. For more information please contact the Environmental Education/ Recreation Department at 716-354-9101 ext. 236 or AlleganySP [at]parks [dot]ny [dot]gov.
