The Chautauqua Literary and Scientific Circle earlier this month announced the addition of The Boys in the Bunkhouse: Servitude and Salvation in the Heartland by Dan Barry as its latest 2017 selection, adding a unique facet to Week Eight’s exploration of “Media and the News: Ethics in the Digital Age.” Barry will present his work at 3:30 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 17, in the Hall of Philosophy.

A Dickensian tale from America’s heartland, The Boys in the Bunkhouse is the harrowing yet uplifting story of the exploitation and abuse of a resilient group of men with intellectual disability, and the heroic efforts of those who helped them to find justice and reclaim their lives. Pulitzer Prize winner Barry also writes the much-lauded “This Land” column for The New York Times. Click here to read more about the book and its author.
