A white supremacist group is among those gathering at the Olean Public Library to protest a scheduled program that includes a drag queen reading a children’s book about self-expression.
The library has been celebrating Pride Month and the LGBTQ community all month but, in the last few days, has been getting phone calls and negative posts on social media about tonight’s event. Several people also stopped by the library in person to complain about the program.
The library’s program director says because similar programs have been well-received across the country, and other LGBTQ programs in Olean went over well, she thought having Flo Leeta read “Jacob’s new Dress” and “Morris Micklewhite and the Tangerine Dress” would be fine.
She says both books have been on the library’s shelves for years.
