September is suicide prevention month. One reason for suicide that isn’t talked about very much is the grief that comes after losing a husband or wife.
One possible example of that played out in Grand Island and the Allegheny National Forest over the last couple of weeks when a 63-year-old man disappeared two days after his wife of many years died of brain cancer. He was found dead several days later. The official cause of death has not been released yet.
Bernard Otterman, who just wrote a novel centering on the real-life double suicide of a husband and wife, says the surviving spouse should remember what the marriage represents.
Otterman’s book is “Self-Deliverance: The Death and Life of Arthur Koestler.” You can hear my conversation with Mr. Otterman on an upcoming LiveLine.
