McKean County Special Olympians captured 20 medals and numerous other awards at the annual Pennsylvania Special Olympics State Games, May 31-June 2, at Penn State.
At the pool, Charlie Barr won gold medals in the 25M freestyle and the 25M backstroke. Margie Kibby won a gold medal in the 25M backstroke and a bronze medal in the 25M freestyle. Chuck Taylor won a gold medal in the 25M backstroke and a sixth place ribbon in the 25M freestyle. Julie Boyle and Ken Burlingame won silver medals in the 25M backstroke and the 25M freestyle. Susan Parkes won a bronze medal in the 25M freestyle and a fifth place ribbon in the 25M backstroke. Ashley Peterson won a fourth place ribbon in the 25M freestyle.
In softball skills competition, T.A. Larson, Don Lindemuth, Nick Battles and Robert Tubbs won gold medals, Sheridan Phillips and Laverne Skillman won silver medals, and Jeff Vanscoter won a bronze medal. In basketball skills competition, Anthony Clancy won a gold medal and Brittany Bailey won a silver medal.
In golf, George Burton won a gold medal in the skills competition. Jean Zumstein won a fourth place ribbon and Kathy McGuire won a fifth place ribbon in bowling singles competition.
McKean County Special Olympics is a year-round program of sports training and competition for athletes with intellectual and physical disabilities.
