PennDOT plans to improve bicycle access to Route 6, in an effort to increase not only outdoor recreation opportunities across Pennsylvania’s northern tier but, heritage tourism opportunities as well.
During the PA Wilds dinner and awards banquet last night in Kersey, Department of Conservation and Natural Resources Secretary Cindy Dunn says it just makes sense to try to bring more people into the region.
PennDOT Secretary Leslie Richards says the planning will start next month, when the agency will review the current condition of Route 6 bicycle facilities, as well as safety and environmental factors.
“This region of Pennsylvania has so much to offer to the public with its scenery and history, and this is a prime opportunity to enhance tourism in the PA Wilds and along the Route 6 corridor,” she said.
She says PennDOT wants the route, designated as PA Bike Route Y, to be a go-to destination for cyclists, so they will also be conducting public surveys and online meetings as part of the nplanning process.
DCED Secretary Dennis Davis sad, “According to our most recent data travelers spent more than $1.7 billion throughout the region and we are committed to keeping that momentum moving forward.”
The PA Wilds region includes four counties along Route 6: McKean, Warren, Potter and Tioga.
