Wednesday afternoon local businessman Steven Stidd walked out of the Mckean County Courthouse a free man. Stidd was on trial for the shooting death of his son-in-law Melvin Bizzarro on January 16th, 2015 in the small parking lot behind Togi’s Restruant. Defense Attorney James Miller of Smethport spoke on behalf of the Stidd family. Miller said the death of Melvin Bizzarro was a tragedy and that the Stidd family is happy to have their father home. After Stidd’s first preliminary hearing, District Court Judge Dominic Cercone ruled that the prosecution did not prove Stidd did not fire in self defense. The Attorney General’s office later decided to re-file charges against Stidd for homicide. After a second preliminary hearing Stidd was bound over for a jury trial. He was arrested in April 2017 and had remained in FCI Mckean until his release on Wednesday November 1st. During his jury trial, state prosecutors failed to prove once again that Stidd did not act in self defense. Mr. Stidd is currently spending time with his family and getting back to his business.
