St. Bonaventure baseball coach Larry Sudbrook has been selected for induction to the New YorkState Baseball Hall of Fame as part of the class of 2015. Sudbrook will be one of 15 baseball icons – only two of them from the college ranks — to join the Hall of Fame. The induction will take place Nov. 1 at the Hilton Hotel in Troy, N.Y. “We don’t induct people on batting average or home runs, we induct people based on their service and legacy within the game,” said Rene LeRoux, executive director of the Hall of Fame. “Larry is a career baseball guy who’s had great success and has a great reputation. We did our due diligence and everyone said, in his career and in life he’s a stand-up guy not only as a coach but also as a person.” “Obviously I am flattered that people think enough of what we’ve done here (at St. Bonaventure) to consider me in the first place,” Sudbrook said. “This is really a testament to the players who’ve performed on the field for us rather than anything I’ve done.” Sudbrook recently completed his 30th season as the head coach of the Bonnies. He is far and away the winningest coach in the program’s history with 628 victories. Sudbrook’s career record stands at 628-656-9. He has led St. Bonaventure to eight appearances in the Atlantic 10 Conference tournament, one A-10 Championship and one NCAA Tournament berth (2004), and 19 seasons of 20 wins or more. He was named the A-10 Coach of the Year in 2000 and in 2006. Earlier this month, pitcher Steven Klimek became the 11th student-athlete who played for Sudbrook to be chosen in the Major League Baseball draft when he was selected by the Baltimore Orioles. Sudbrook’s legacy of helping develop students as well as athletes is evidenced by the Bonnies’ 35 Academic All-Conference selections during his tenure. A 1978 graduate of Kent State, the Cleveland, Ohio, native resides in Bradford, Pa. For more information on the New York State Baseball Hall of Fame, visit www.nysbhof.com.
