Two free-ranging deer in Elk County had to be euthanized Wednesday night because they were acting strangely.
The state game commission says the deer were discovered about 20 miles north of a disease management area and had identification tags in their ears, indicating they had, at one time, been part of a captive deer herd.
Wayne Laroche, who is heading up the commission’s chronic wasting disease response team, says the deer are being examined by a doctor, who will determine whether either deer was infected.
Laroche says this is disturbing news following the discovering of a CWD-positive deer earlier this month in the same management area. He adds that with help from the Department of Agriculture, the commission will do everything in its power to sort out what happened quickly and take appropriate action.
