Gowanda firefighters preformed a swift water rescue Monday after an SUV went into the rain-swollen Cattaraugus Creek. Gowanda Police Chief Dennis Feldman says a report came in at around 1pm Monday afternoon for an SUV floating down the stream with its lights on. The vehicle eventually got hung up on some rocks and later a 19 year-old woman was rescued after the first attempt failed when a boat capsized. The woman was transported to ECMC in Buffalo for treatment of hypothermia after spending nearly 30 minutes in the car as it filled with cold water. Police say that the woman had recently obtained her driver’s license and had attempted to park the SUV behind a store when the SUV lurched forward over a guard rail, down an embankment, and into the creek below.
