The 148th Open championship got under way today under overcast skies and rain today at Royal Portrush. John Rahm of Spain was five under after nine holes and held the lead. Tyrell Hatton of England and Shane Lowry of Ireland are at 4 under with 67’s today.
Brooks Kopeka is among a group at after a three under 68 along with Webb Simpson, Sergio Garcia of Spain and Tommy Fleetwood of England. Tiger Woods is over 10 shots back after one of his worst rounds ever in an Open Championship.
Rory McIIlroy, the Open Championship favorite, shot an opening round eight over 79 today at the 148th Open at Royal Portrush. McIIlroy started his opening round with a quadruple-bogey on the first hole and finished with a triple-bogey on the 18th. In between, it was an agonizingly frustrating day for the four-time major winner in the first Open Championship played in his native Northern Ireland in 68 years.
Phil Mickleson shot a five over 76 and is nine shots back after day one at Royal Portrush. Sergio Garcia carded a three under 68 today and is one back.
