Senator Pat Toomey (R-PA) has introduced a bill to make it easier to donate excess food to organizations that distribute food to the needy.
The Food Donation Improvement Act, co-sponsored with Senator Richard Blumenthal (D-CT), would exempt businesses and organizations providing excess food to food banks and similar operations from legal liability as long as the donations are made in good faith.
Under current law, donors to food banks that charge a fee for their service are not exempt from liability. Toomey hopes that closing this loophole will encourage more donations.
