Sweden Township police were called to Ulysses Monday morning for a burglary in progress, and ended up in a three-hour stand-off with the suspect.
They learned that Andrew Jeffers was also being investigated for possibly stealing a 9mm handgun from the same home a few days ago.
While on the way to the scene, police learned Jeffers left that home, but then got a call from another resident saying he had just left her home, which was less than half a block away. When they got there, police couldn’t see any footprints in the snow so they believed Jeffers was hiding in a barn on the property and set up a perimeter with the other police agencies they had called.
Police attempted to get him out of the barn but, after three hours went in, found him hiding under a mattress and took him into custody. He had a number of stolen items as well as drugs and paraphernalia.
Police handcuffed and belted Jeffers and put him in a patrol car, but he managed to get out and attempted to run away. Police were able to tackle him and get him back into custody. He’s in Potter County Jail in lieu of $50,000. He’s also facing drug charges in Wellsville, New York.
