A 1909 Honus Wagner baseball card was auctioned off Sunday night for $6.6 million, shattering the previous record for a highest-selling sports card of all time. The previous record was set last year with a $5.2 million Mickey Mantle Topps card -— from 1952 and in mint condition.
One of the most sought-after baseball cards in history, the T206 features a youthful Wagner in his Pittsburgh Pirates uniform, his hair parted down the middle. Wagner is considered one of the Pirates’ greatest-ever players.
New Jersey-based Robert Edward Auctions handled the bidding, which started at $1 million on July 23. The buyer was not identified.
