The New York Yankees hammered the Pittsburgh Pirates 16-0 at PNC Park last night on WESB Sports.
Aaron Judge sent a laser to the seats in left field in the eighth inning to put the game out of reach with his third career grand slam — and 30th homer of the season, most in the majors — as New York drilled the Pirates to split their two-game interleague set.
Aaron Hicks added a grand slam of his own off a position player an inning later on a night when the Yankees hit six home runs in all to push their team total to a major league-leading 139. Giancarlo Stanton, Josh Donaldson, Joey Gallo and Kyle Higashioka also homered for New York to back Luis Severino, who went six scoreless innings.
Severino gave up just 4 hits and walked none. He retired 12 straight and 18 of the final 20 hitters he faced after giving up a single to Ke’Bryan Hayes and a double to Bryan Reynolds to begin the bottom of the first.
Pittsburgh starter Mitch Keller worked in and out of trouble over six innings, allowing four runs on a season-high 10 hits with a walk and seven strikeouts. He combined with 3 relievers and Josh VanMeter to give up 22 hits to New York, marking the Yankees season high.
The Yankees improve to 59-23 on the season and will next travel for a 4-game set at the Boston Red Sox. The Pirates fall to to 33-48 ahead of a day-night doubleheader in Cincinnati today against the Reds. You can hear the second game at 6:45 tonight on WESB Sports.
