An Appeals Court has ordered New York State to once again redraw its congressional district map.
The Appellate Division of the state Supreme Court reversed a lower court, saying the state redistricting commission should have been given a chance to submit a second map after its first map was rejected in 2022. Instead, the Legislature drew its own map, which was then replaced by a court-ordered map drawn up by an “election expert.”
The Olean area was at the heart of the dispute between the two proposed maps, one putting it in the same district as Ithaca and the other with Erie County.
The court ordered the commission to “commence its duties forthwith.”
