New York Governor Kathy Hochul announced a proposal Friday that would prohibit local New York law enforcement agencies from entering into 287(g) agreements with US Immigration and Customs Enforcement to perform limited immigration enforcement duties.
Fourteen law enforcement agencies in New York, including the Village of Allegany and the Cattaraugus County Sheriff’s Office, have signed 287(g) agreements with ICE, and Hochul’s proposal would void all 14 agreements.
Assemblyman Joe Sempolinski criticized the proposal, saying “it is completely inappropriate for Governor Hochul to attempt to prevent local and county law enforcement agencies and the governments they represent from deciding what is in the best interest of their own communities.”
Hochul says that the proposal sends a strong message to ICE, saying “You’ll not weaponize local police officers against their own communities in the State of New York.”
