The Pittsburgh Penguins had their five-game point streak snapped Monday night in Boston, falling to the Bruins 2-1 in a tight, frustrating loss at TD Garden.
The game was essentially decided in the first period — Boston scored twice in the opening frame, Pittsburgh answered with one, and neither team could find the net over the final 40 minutes. The Pens outshot the Bruins 35 to 28 on the night and actually earned four power play opportunities — but went zero for four with the man advantage, leaving eight power play shots wasted. That’ll cost you on the road.
Goalie Stuart Skinner was solid in defeat and earned the second star despite the loss. On the Boston side, it was Marat Khusnutdinov who did the damage with the game-winning goal, while Evgeni Malkin — still at the center of trade and contract speculation — was held without a point and won just 25 percent of his faceoffs.
Pittsburgh doesn’t have long to stew — the Buffalo Sabres come to town Thursday night. Puck drops at seven.
