The Pittsburgh Penguins had Carolina right where they wanted them — and then the Hurricanes took it away in overtime. Final score: Carolina six, Pittsburgh five, Wednesday night in Raleigh.
The Penguins were electric in the third period, scoring FOUR goals to erase a one-nothing deficit and take what looked like a commanding lead. Erik Karlsson was magnificent — two goals and an assist for three points on the night. Sidney Crosby added a goal and a helper, while Bryan Rust and Ben Kindel also found the back of the net in that wild third frame.
But Carolina wouldn’t go quietly. The Hurricanes clawed back to tie it, and then Jackson Blake — who finished with three points — set up the overtime winner to steal two points from the Penguins right at home.
The loss stings, especially with Pittsburgh fighting for playoff position. The Penguins out-shot Carolina 35 to 44 but simply couldn’t hold the lead when it mattered most.
Pittsburgh gets right back at it — hosting the Winnipeg Jets this Saturday, then Carolina again Sunday at PPG Paints Arena. A chance for revenge comes fast.
