It was a tale of two weekends for Western Pennsylvania and Western New York hockey fans.
The Buffalo Sabres? On a tear. Saturday, the Sabres headed to Los Angeles and left with a 4-1 win over the Kings, getting a power play goal from defenseman Rasmus Dahlin and a third-period insurance tally from Sam Carrick — who earned second-star honors. Buffalo outshot L.A. 33 to 27 and never looked back. The Sabres have now won seven of their last ten, and are firmly in the thick of the Eastern Conference playoff race.
The Pittsburgh Penguins had a split weekend. Saturday was a thriller — the Pens rallied past Winnipeg 5-4 in a shootout, with Rickard Rakell and Sidney Crosby both converting in the shootout. But Sunday at home was a different story — Pittsburgh was sloppy, taking seven penalties, and the Carolina Hurricanes cashed in with three power play goals on the way to a convincing 5-1 victory. Evgeni Malkin and Yegor Chinakhov took the penalties hard.
Buffalo travels to Boston Wednesday. Pittsburgh hosts Colorado Tuesday night.
