Some big news out of Olean today — St. Bonaventure University appears to have found its next men’s basketball head coach.
ESPN is reporting this morning that the Bonnies are finalizing a deal with Daemen University coach Mike MacDonald to take over the program following the departure of Mark Schmidt. And the resume speaks for itself.
MacDonald is the only coach in college basketball history to win more than 100 games at the Division One, Division Two, and Division Three levels. Over the last two seasons alone at Daemen, he’s gone a combined 61 and 3. Sixty-one and three. That is not a typo.
What makes this hire even more special — MacDonald is a St. Bonaventure alum, graduating from the school back in 1988. This is very much a homecoming.
He won’t be coming in with Schmidt’s salary, though. Reports indicate Bonaventure will pay MacDonald significantly less, with the school redirecting resources toward player salaries and revenue sharing under the new college sports landscape. That’s just where college basketball is headed.
The hire is being driven in large part by Bonnies GM Adrian Wojnarowski, who was drawn to MacDonald’s ability to build and manage rosters in the transfer portal era — even without fully funded scholarships at Daemen.
A Bonnie coming home. We will keep you updated as this deal becomes official.
