A tough Monday evening at PNC Park, as the Pittsburgh Pirates got shut out — blanked 5-0, by the San Diego Padres to open this three-game home series.
Bubba Chandler got the start, but he couldn’t find his footing. The young righty lasted just four-and-a-third innings, giving up five hits and walking four, allowing three earned runs before the bullpen took over. The damage was done — and Pittsburgh’s offense never answered the call.
German Marquez was the story on the other side — the Padres’ starter worked five dominant innings, scattering six hits and not allowing a single run. San Diego tacked on insurance late, with runs in the fourth, fifth, sixth, and eighth to salt it away.
Pittsburgh had seven hits on the night — Spencer Horwitz led the way with two — but the Pirates went just one-for-ten with runners in scoring position. Left ’em stranded. Left ’em frustrated.
The Pirates and Padres are back at it tonight at PNC Park. The radio pregame begins at 6:15 EDT on WESB Sports, B107.5 FM
