The Pittsburgh Pirates couldn’t finish the job Wednesday morning at PNC Park — dropping the rubber game of their series against San Diego, 8-2, as the Padres took the series two games to one and headed back west.
It was a rough one. Three Pittsburgh errors opened the door, and the Padres walked right through it — scoring four runs in the seventh and four more in the ninth to pull away. Starter José Urquidy lasted just two innings, and the bullpen couldn’t hold the line. Nick Yorke was the bright spot offensively with three hits, but Pittsburgh managed just six hits on the day and went one-for-nine with runners in scoring position. Not good enough.
The Pirates now pack their bags for Chicago, where they open a three-game series with the Cubs at Wrigley Field Friday afternoon — first pitch at two-twenty Eastern.
Pittsburgh heads to Chicago looking to bounce back.
