William Byron hit a Hendrick Motorsports milestone after taking advantage of yet another Ross Chastain incident to nab the win in yesterday’s Goodyear 400 at Darlington Raceway.
Byron’s victory marked the 100th win for Hendrick Motorsport’s 24 team since its introduction in 1992 with Jeff Gordon behind the wheel. Since then, the 24 car has been piloted only by Gordon, Chase Elliott, and William Byron.
A wreck between Ross Chastain and Kyle Larson on Lap 288 allowed Byron to soar by and take the checkered flag. Chastain left Larson little room by running him up the track in turn 1 of a late race restart, resulting in a wreck between the two.
Chastain took responsibility for the incident in a post-race interview, stating “I wanted to squeeze him. I wanted to push him up. We’d been racing back and forth all day. But I definitely didn’t want to turn myself.”
Larson finished the race in 20th position, while Chastain ended the day in 29th.
