A Western New York powerlifter once known as the “World’s Strongest Man” has died.
Don Reinhoudt dominated the sport of powerlifting in the 1970’s, winning the IPF World Powerlifting Superheavyweight Championship four consecutive times from 1973-1979 before retiring because of the effects of his 365 pound weight on his health. After losing more than 120 pounds over a span of four months, Reinhaut started competing in the World’s Strongest Man competition, which he won in 1979. Three torn muscles forced his retirement from sports the following year.
A believer in giving back to the community, Reinhoudt was known for his philanthropic work, and his time as the director of the Chautauqua County Youth Bureau. He also toured as a motivational speaker.
According to the Pennsylvania State Police, on Monday morning Reinhoudt’s vehicle left the road in the town of Pomfret and hit a tree. He was later pronounced dead at Brooks Memorial Hospital. The crash is still under investigation.
