Move over 716, Western New York is getting a new area code.
Starting Monday, new landline and mobile numbers in the current 716 area code will be given a number in the new 624 area code.
The new “overlay” code will exist alongside the current one, and people with 716 numbers will not be affected by the change.
The change comes in response to a projection that 716 would run out of phone numbers early next year. The new overlay code ensures that Western New York will have enough numbers for another 29 years.
