The St. Bonaventure men’s basketball team gutted it out with a gritty 63-57 victory over fifth-seeded George Mason at PPG Paints Arena, advancing to the Atlantic 10 semifinal and keeping the farewell tour alive. The Bonnies are now in the Atlantic 10 semifinal, one win away from the championship game and a legitimate shot at an NCAA tournament bid that would be the storybook ending to Mark Schmidt’s 19-year run.
Schmidt, after the game, said simply, they’re not done just yet. “We had adversity and we overcame it. Second half, you know, we were getting dominated in the paint in the first half, second chance points.”
Schmidt continued, “And if you look at the stat sheet, you know, I’m a firm believer you win those five boxes down at the bottom of the stat sheet, you know, points off turnovers, points in the paint, second chance points, fast break points. When you win those columns, you have a great chance. And all those are really toughness things, physical and mental toughness areas. And we passed the test today and I’m proud. And now we go on and play another really good team in Dayton tomorrow.”
That game against Dayton happens at two o’clock tomorrow. You’ll catch the radio pregame at 1 30 on 100.1, the hero.
