Buffalo, believe it — your Sabres are for real.
Thursday night in San Jose, the Sabres shut out the Sharks five to nothing — a dominant, wire-to-wire performance. Tage Thompson potted a goal, the defense was airtight, and goaltender Ukko-Pekka Luukkonen was simply untouchable, stopping all 23 shots he faced.
With the win, Buffalo now has 90 points on the season — tied with the Carolina Hurricanes for first place in the entire Eastern Conference. The Sabres have now extended their franchise-record road point streak to 12 straight games — a number that would have seemed unimaginable in Buffalo just a year ago.
Their playoff odds now sit at 99.7 percent according to MoneyPuck. This is happening, Sabres Nation.
Up next — Buffalo heads to Los Angeles Saturday to face the Kings at three p-m Eastern, then visits Anaheim Sunday at seven. A strong California road trip could put the Sabres in sole possession of first place in the East heading into next week.
After 14 consecutive years missing the playoffs — the drought is almost certainly over. The Sabres are flying. Don’t look now, but Buffalo is a legitimate Stanley Cup contender.
