What a night at the Reilly Center.
In a heart-pounding overtime battle, the St. Bonaventure Bonnies defeated Drexel 69 to 67 Thursday night in the first round of the WNIT — a win that had the crowd on their feet from start to finish.
It was anything but easy. Drexel jumped out to a 13-9 lead after the first quarter and dominated in the paint throughout the night. But the Bonnies clawed back, tied it at 59 with under two-and-a-half minutes to go in regulation, and then survived a wild overtime period — taking the lead with less than ten seconds remaining. Drexel’s Amaris Baker had one final chance from three-point range, but her shot bounced off the iron to end it.
It marks St. Bonaventure’s first postseason win since the 2015-16 season.
The Bonnies now advance to face Middle Tennessee State in the second round. Date and time are still to be announced — but Bona Nation, the dream is very much alive.
