Not the Opening Day the Pittsburgh Pirates were hoping for.
The Bucs dropped their season opener at Citi Field this afternoon, falling to the New York Mets in a wild one — eleven to seven. And the story of the game starts and ends with Paul Skenes. The reigning Cy Young Award winner lasted just two thirds of an inning, allowing five runs on four hits and two walks before being pulled with the Pirates already in a deep hole. New York jumped on him early and never looked back, building an 11-to-4 lead before Pittsburgh made it interesting late.
To their credit, the new-look Pirates lineup showed some pop. New addition Brandon Lowe slugged two home runs and drove in three. Nick Gonzales went two-for-four with two RBIs, and Ryan O’Hearn added a solo shot as well. Ten hits total for Pittsburgh — the bats aren’t the problem today.
Freddy Peralta took the win for New York, striking out seven over five innings.
The Pirates and Mets are back at it Saturday at three-ten Eastern. Skenes will have better days.
