St. Bonaventure made it official yesterday — the Bonnies have their next men’s basketball head coach.
Mike MacDonald was announced Tuesday as the 20th head coach in program history, and this one has a real feel-good story attached to it — MacDonald is a 1988 graduate of St. Bonaventure, coming home to lead his alma mater.
The resume is hard to argue with. In his last two seasons at Daemen University, MacDonald posted a 61 and 3 record, going undefeated in conference play during that span. He’s the only coach in college basketball history to win more than 100 games at the Division One, Division Two, and Division Three levels.
He did it all at Daemen with just five scholarships — winning nearly 75 percent of his games and reaching six NCAA tournaments. That kind of roster management is exactly what drew St. Bonaventure’s front office, led by GM Adrian Wojnarowski, to make this hire.
If you want to welcome Coach MacDonald back to Olean in person — a formal introductory press conference is set for April 8th at the Reilly Center.
A Bonnie is home.
