The New York Yankees couldn’t hold on Wednesday night at Yankee Stadium — dropping a tough one to the Athletics, 3-2, as Oakland evened the series at one game apiece.
New York jumped out fast — scoring two runs in the first inning and looking like they’d cruise. But then the bats went completely silent. The Yankees managed just four hits on the night and went one-for-seven with runners in scoring position. Oakland tied it in the fourth, then closer Joel Kuhnel nailed down the save after the A’s grabbed the lead for good in the ninth. Starter Will Warren pitched well enough, going four-and-two-thirds with five strikeouts, but the offense gave him nothing to work with after that first frame.
The Yankees and Athletics play the series finale today at Yankee Stadium — first pitch at one-thirty-five this afternoon. Then New York heads to Tampa Bay for a weekend series with the Rays.
