The Pennsylvania DEP confirmed a litter violation at the McKean County Landfill near Mount Jewett after an investigation last month. State inspectors found trash had blown into woods east of the facility, violating Pennsylvania code requiring landfill operators to keep litter on site. A follow-up inspection March 26th confirmed the litter had been cleaned up. Casella Waste, which operates the landfill, blamed unusually high winds and heavy snowfall this past winter for overwhelming its litter controls. The company says new fencing has since been installed to handle severe weather.
