Steel City, they’re in. The Pittsburgh Penguins have clinched a playoff berth — taking down the New Jersey Devils 5-2 Thursday night in Newark and punching their ticket to the postseason for the first time in four years.
Pittsburgh was sharp from the drop of the puck — scoring first in the opening period and never really letting New Jersey get comfortable. Egor Chinakhov was first star of the game — scoring the go-ahead goal, adding two assists, and delivering a three-point performance on a night when it mattered most. Erik Karlsson was electric on the blue line, picking up a goal and an assist. And Sidney Crosby — true to form on a big stage — finished with two assists and third-star honors, winning the faceoff battle when the Penguins needed it.
Pittsburgh out-shot New Jersey thirty to twenty-one and sealed it with an empty-netter. The drought is over.
The Penguins are back home Saturday afternoon to host Washington
