The baseball world is mourning the loss of former Pittsburgh Pirates player and manager Phil Garner, who has passed away after a 2-year battle with pancreatic cancer.
Garner, known as “Scrap Iron,” was a key part of the Pirates’ 1979 World Series championship team, earning a reputation for his gritty play and leadership. He later returned to Pittsburgh as manager, continuing his long career in Major League Baseball that also included managing the Milwaukee Brewers and Houston Astros.
Garner was widely respected throughout the game for his toughness, passion, and baseball knowledge.
He was 76 years old.
