A tough opening night in Pittsburgh.
The Philadelphia Flyers spoiled the Penguins’ playoff return Saturday night at PPG Paints Arena, outlasting Pittsburgh three-to-two in Game 1 of their Eastern Conference first-round series.
It was a scoreless first period, and Jamie Drysdale broke it open in the second with a wrist shot past Stuart Skinner. Evgeni Malkin answered before the buzzer to send it to the third tied at one. But Travis Sanheim and 19-year-old rookie Porter Martone — who scored his first career playoff goal — put Philadelphia up by two in the final frame. Bryan Rust made it three-to-two with a minute to play, but Dan Vladar stoned Anthony Mantha in the final seconds to preserve the win.
Game 2 goes Monday night at seven o’clock Eastern, right back here at PPG Paints Arena in Pittsburgh, with the Penguins looking to even the series before it shifts to Philadelphia.
