Pittsburgh Pirates baseball — and the Bucs dropped the opener of their home series against St. Louis Monday night at PNC Park — four-to-two.
The Pirates used an opener-based approach — Cam Sanders got the ball first but lasted just a third of an inning. Wilber Dotel then stepped up in a big way — throwing four scoreless innings, surrendering zero hits and striking out three. But the wheels came off in the ninth when Dennis Santana was touched for two home runs — surrendering four earned runs on four hits and two walks in just two-thirds of an inning to turn a tight game into a four-to-two Cardinals win. St. Louis starter Dustin May cruised through six innings, allowing just two runs on seven hits.
On offense, Nick Gonzales was Pittsburgh’s bright spot — going three-for-four with a double. Jake Mangum and Ryan O’Hearn each drove in a run, but the Bucs stranded runners and couldn’t put anything together late.
Pittsburgh falls to sixteen and thirteen. Tonight it’s Game Two — 6:40pm EDT at PNC Park. The Cardinals send Kyle Leahy to the mound. Pittsburgh’s starter is to be determined.
The radio pregame begins at 6:15pm EDT on WESB Sports, B107.5FM
