The Pittsburgh Pirates bounced back in a big way Wednesday night in Phoenix.
One night after being shut out nine to nothing, the Bucs flipped the script — beating the Arizona Diamondbacks one to nothing in a masterpiece of a pitching duel. And the man responsible? Paul Skenes.
The young right-hander was absolutely dominant — going eight full innings, allowing just two hits, striking out seven, and not allowing a single earned run. He threw just ninety-seven pitches. Just twenty-three years old — and already pitching like a future Cy Young winner. Closer Gregory Soto came on to finish it off in the ninth for the save.
Offensively, the Pirates were quiet — but Brandon Lowe gave them everything they needed — a solo home run in the first inning to put Pittsburgh up one to nothing, a lead Skenes made sure would hold. Bryan Reynolds went two for four to lead the offense.
The Buccos are now twenty and seventeen on the year. They wrap up the Arizona series today in Phoenix before heading to San Francisco to open a three-game set against the Giants on Friday night at ten-fifteen Eastern — Oracle Park in the Bay Area.
