The Buffalo Sabres are one win away from going up two-nothing on the Montreal Canadiens — and they play tonight to try to make that happen.
In Game One Wednesday night at KeyBank Center, Buffalo defeated Montreal four to two to open the Eastern Conference Semifinals. Josh Doan and Ryan McLeod each scored a goal and added an assist, with Zach Benson setting up two goals — and goaltender Alex Lyon stopping twenty-six shots to get the win.
The Sabres converted two of three power plays — a massive turnaround after going just one for twenty-four on the man advantage against Boston in Round One. Defenseman Bowen Byram scored his fourth goal of the playoffs, tying the Sabres’ all-time record for defensemen in a single postseason.
There is one concern — captain Rasmus Dahlin left late in the game after blocking a shot, though he did return to the bench before the final buzzer. His status tonight is worth monitoring.
Game Two is tonight at seven o’clock Eastern right back at KeyBank Center — on T-N-T and H-B-O Max. A win tonight and the Sabres head to Montreal with a commanding two-games-to-nothing lead.
Western New York is believing.
