The Pittsburgh Pirates had the Cardinals on the ropes in St. Louis Tuesday night — but couldn’t finish the job, falling 9-6 in ten innings.
Pittsburgh actually had a chance. Trailing by three after six, the Bucs rallied for four runs in the fifth to take a lead — but the Cardinals kept coming back. St. Louis plated three in the tenth off reliever Mason Montgomery, who recorded just one out and surrendered a pair of runs without retiring the side. Game over.
Mitch Keller started for Pittsburgh, going 5 & 2/3 innings, allowing four earned runs on four hits with three strikeouts. Offensively, Jared Triolo went three for four. Bryan Reynolds added a double and two R-B-I. And Oneil Cruz went two for five with an R-B-I.
But twelve hits and three-for-seventeen with runners in scoring position tells the story of a team that left too many on base.
The series continues Wednesday night in St. Louis. The radio pregame begins at 6:15 pm EDT on WESB Sports, B-107.5FM.
