Waking up this morning, the motorsports world is in shock.
Kyle Busch — a two-time NASCAR Cup Series champion and one of the greatest drivers the sport has ever seen — died yesterday. He was 41 years old.
According to an anonymous source who spoke to the Associated Press, Busch was testing in the Chevrolet racing simulator in Concord, North Carolina on Wednesday when he became unresponsive and was rushed to a hospital in Charlotte. No official cause of death has been released.
Busch was the 2015 and 2019 Cup Series champion and holds the all-time record for wins across NASCAR’s three national series — 234 combined victories, including 63 at the Cup level, 102 in the Xfinity Series, and 69 in the Craftsman Truck Series.
He is survived by his wife Samantha, children Brexton and Lennix, and his brother — NASCAR Hall of Famer Kurt Busch.
Driver Ricky Stenhouse Junior summed up the feelings of many overnight, posting: “The sport won’t be the same without you. Rest easy, Rowdy.”
Busch had been set to compete in Sunday’s Coca-Cola 600 at Charlotte Motor Speedway. That race will now carry the weight of an entire sport in mourning.
