The Pittsburgh Pirates made it a productive Memorial Day at PNC Park.
Pittsburgh edged the Chicago Cubs 2-1 in a tightly contested pitching duel on a holiday afternoon. Carmen Mlodzinski started and worked five innings, allowing one earned run and striking out two before giving way to the bullpen. Wilber Dotel was the story in relief — three shutout innings, four strikeouts — earning the win. Gregory Soto slammed the door for the save. Ben Brown was sharp for Chicago in a losing effort, striking out seven over six innings.
The Bucs got all they needed from a pair of big swings. Henry Davis launched one over the wall in the third to put Pittsburgh on top
Brandon Lowe added an R-B-I double in the seventh for the game-winning run. Oneil Cruz and Spencer Horwitz each went two-for-four to pace the offense.
