CARE for Children held its 24th annual basketball mini-camp for school-age children Tuesday evening, with close to 30 children in attendance, at Callahan Park in Bradford. The camp gives children of all abilities a chance to improve motor skills, build social connections, and stay physically active.
CARE therapists, teachers, and staff joined volunteer coaches from the community, each paired with a team for the duration of the event. Campers rotated through skill stations covering passing, dribbling, shooting, layups, ball handling, and defense. Each child received a t-shirt, basketball, and pizza following the event.
The mini-camp was sponsored by the Rotary Club of Bradford and the Italian American Progressive Club (IAPC). Volunteers from the Athletic Department at the University of Pittsburgh at Bradford helped prepare the basketballs for the event. Several Rotarians volunteered at the mini-camp to assist with registration. CARE’s therapeutic recreation programs are funded, in part, by an annual grant from the United Way of the Bradford Area, Inc.
“CARE is grateful to the organizations and volunteers who help make this event possible,” said Tina Martin, Executive Director of CARE for Children. “Events like our basketball mini-camp are a great example of what can happen when community partners come together to support children of all abilities. With support from our therapists, teachers, volunteers, and local organizations, campers are able to build skills, stay active, and have fun!”
