The Buffalo Sabres have locked up one of their young building blocks. Zach Benson signed a seven-year extension worth seven-point-five million annually, keeping him under contract through the 2032-33 season.
The twenty-one-year-old was set for restricted free agency after a career year — forty-three points in sixty-five games — before turning it up even further in the playoffs. Benson matched Tage Thompson for the team lead with five goals, added four assists, and drew eleven penalties, third-most of anyone in the entire postseason. His physical, relentless forecheck became a real problem for both Boston and Montreal in Buffalo’s playoff run.
A long-term commitment to a player who’s clearly part of the Sabres’ core moving forward.
