Big shakeup in Queens. The Mets have fired manager Carlos Mendoza, just past the season’s midpoint, with the club sitting at a dismal 34-47 — last in the NL East, 15 games back of Atlanta.
The final straw came in a doubleheader sweep at the hands of the Cubs, including a six-error meltdown in the nightcap. New York’s been outscored 54-22 during a six-game skid. Mendoza went 206-199 over three seasons, leading the Mets to the NLCS in 2024 — but couldn’t stop the bleeding despite a payroll north of 330-million dollars. President of baseball ops David Stearns called it simply “time for a change.”
Andy Green, the team’s vice president of player development and former Padres manager, takes over on an interim basis for the rest of the year.
As for a permanent replacement — names already swirling include former Red Sox skipper Alex Cora, Mets bench coach Kai Correa, and franchise legend Carlos Beltran.
