The dream is over for the United States men’s national team — and it ended in ugly fashion.
The U-S crashed out of their home World Cup Monday night in Seattle, falling 4-1 Belgium answered just two minutes later and never looked back.
Goalkeeper Matt Freese made a critical error in the fifty-seventh minute — gifting Belgium their third goal — and Romelu Lukaku twisted the knife in stoppage time with a fourth off yet another American defensive blunder. Christian Pulisic left the game with a knock and never seemed himself while he was on the pitch.
And the Folarin Balogun controversy? It didn’t matter. Despite all the drama of overturning his red card suspension, Balogun had zero impact on a night where the U-S was thoroughly outclassed.
The Americans exit at the same Round of Sixteen stage they fell in four years ago in Qatar. For a team that had so much hype playing in a home World Cup — that’s going to sting for a very long time.
