The Pirates needed extra innings to take the opener of today’s day-night doubleheader in the Bronx, beating the Yankees 5-to-3 in 10 innings. Mitch Keller battled through a shaky recent stretch to give Pittsburgh a quality start, and the bats backed him up — Nick Gonzales went deep for his sixth homer of the year, part of a Pirates attack that also got a home run from Jacob Gonzalez.
Gerrit Cole worked into the seventh for New York, but Ben Rice’s home run — his 30th of the season — tied the game at three and sent it into extras, where Pittsburgh’s bullpen took over and closed it out.
The two clubs turn right around for game 2 tonight at 7:05pm EDT — Max Fried making his return from the injured list against Pirates rookie Bubba Chandler.
The radio pregame gets underway at 6:40pm EDT on WESB Sports, B107.5FM.
