Max Fried made a triumphant return in Wednesday’s nightcap. Making his first start since May 13th after a bone bruise in his elbow, Fried tossed five scoreless innings, striking out seven and walking just one — retiring his final 12 batters faced and averaging 96 miles an hour on his fastball as the Yankees beat the Pirates 2-0 to salvage a doubleheader split.
Fried didn’t factor in the decision, though — Pittsburgh’s Bubba Chandler matched him nearly pitch for pitch, tossing six-and-a-third scoreless innings of his own. The Yankees finally broke through in the seventh, when Jasson Dominguez’s two-out double and Anthony Volpe’s follow-up single plated both runs off Pittsburgh’s bullpen.
New York avoided a home doubleheader sweep for the first time since 2022, before heading to Philadelphia to open a series with the Phillies Friday.
